Captains Report May/June8th July 2018
Contrary to the previous 8 months May and June has brought exceptionally warm and dry weather, if anything some of us praying for nocturnal rain to offset the now scorched conditions.
As playing golf becomes a more go to option, the Board Competitions, Knock outs ,Club fixtures for all sections start to come thick and fast. The Ladies’ Challenge Bowl Qualifier on 2nd May was won by Pratibha Kanse net 83. The Summer League also commenced,and all male golfers with an official handicap can join the group on relevant Wednesday evenings. Friday afternoon social golf is also available for all members from 3.30pm. Robin Ellis 41 points and Andy Street 38 points were victorious respectively in the George and Goodridge Cups on 6th May. Christine Halpin and Sheila Ashton with 36 points won the Ladies’ Australian Spoons Qualifier on 9th May. Oliver Davies 38 points was the recipient of the Don Baker Mixed Cup on 12th May. The next day Leonara Laugharne over 27 holes was won by Barbara Phillips. Diane Gough and Julie Doherty with 36 points qualified in the Ladies’ Coronation Foursomes on 16th May and the Seniors’ Rocker on 17th May went to James Griffiths with 38 points.
Phil Laugharne with an exceptional 41 points was a decisive winner of the Mixed Racecourse Trophy on 20th May. The Monthly Medal the following weekend was won by Gary Meskimmon net 69.
and Jean Lewis and Andrea Dudden went through in Daily Mail 4’s Qualifier. Immediate Past Captain Vernon Harries now has his name on the Arnold DownTrophy with 38 Stableford points on 3rd June. Jean Lewis with a net 71 won the Ladies Hammond Salver on 6th June.The Seniors’ Open Day (104 entrants) produced an home winner with Terry Gwilliam on 39 points on 8th June.
Ian May dodged the extremely wet afternoon weather to win the President’s Putter with 6up in the bogey format on 10th June,while the Ladies’ Medal winner on the 13th June was Christine Halpin with a net 71/gross 93. Seniors Stableford on 14th June produced a winning score of 39 points from Jeff Wallace Rabbits’ Captain and the Texas Scramble Open Day on 16th June was won by team of Elspeth Owen,Alyson James,Richard James and George James with a score 56.9. On 21st June Phil Wilcox returned like Lazarus to win the Veterans’ Putter with 38 points on his road to recovery. The Ladies Summer Stableford was won by Christine Halpin with 29 points on 23rd June.The June Monthly Medal introduced the new raised Handicap threshold to 36, but Abe Forsyth the lowest handicap in the field off 2 was victorious with a net 68.T he last completed competition in June,on the 27th was Ladies’Jubilee Foursomes Medal with Sheila Ashton and Patricia Roblin successful with a net 74.
Jason Edwards was the Noott Salver winner with a gross 142 (36 holes),and Mickey Davies the Investiture Cup winner with a net 133 (36 holes) the weekend of the Club Championship.The Matthew Hearne Cup was duly won by Mickey Davies for 10+ handicaps. The ladies C&P League results to date are loss and draw at home to Newport Links and Tenby respectively and an away defeat to Machynys.
Congratulations to Elspeth Owen,Nicky Reeves,Alyson James,Jayne Noble,Diane Gough and Judith Phillips for reaching the Welsh Team Plate Final at Langland Bay.
The Senior Section took 40 members to Mond Valley on the 15th May with positive feedback about the experience.
In friendly Senior fixtures they have played 9,won 6,lost 2, drawn 1. 8 pairs attended Carmarthen on the 11th June for the Centenary Cup, and were runners up to the victorious host club in a 5 way 4 ball challenge. Both A & B teams have progressed to the quarter finals of the Senior South Wales Classic Bowl at Pontardawe on 19th July.
The pairing of Steve Lewis and Steve Allen have qualified from the regional Claret Jug at South Pembs to the final at St Pierre on August 1st.
The Tigers have performed very well to date with 4 wins against Glynhir’A’,Carmarthen and Aberystwyth at home, Carmarthen away and 1 defeat to Milford Haven in Dyfed League 1.They lost to Machynys in the quarter final of Jeff Harries Bowl.
The Rabbits continue to maintain their league programme with grateful assistance from members of the Ladies’ Section.Congratulations to Dylan John for finishing runner up in the Dyfed Rabbits’ Open held at Milford Haven with 42 points.
Despite the weather there was a good turn out for the Coors Gold Day on May 11th.
The Entertainment Committee continue to work on events with a successful return to the Club of Honey Fungus on the evening of May 25th.
Finally at thank you to Green Staff and Volunteers for working overtime to get the Course to its present condition.
